Blizzard 2009

...or at least that is what it's getting called in the Mid-Atlantic region. For us NY'ers it was nothin'...all though some of the people on the road were crazy. We left home around 9am on Saturday, and hit Harrisburg, PA around 1:30, that's when it started to actually snow. Even then it wasn't too bad.

We had borrowed my SIL's car (subaru with studded snows) and were cruisin' along fine. We got to our motel (near the reception) around 2:45. I'll tell you what...getting into the motel was interesting: We stayed at a Hamp.ton Inn in Shrew.sbury...I don't think they had plowed their parking lot or driveway...we had no idea how to get into the place and people were getting stuck along the way.

Once we checked in we pretty much got changed and got back in the car. It took us about 25 minutes to drive the 10 miles down the highway to the church. There was practically no one at the church....everyone in Matt's family had backed out (these were the family members that lived in MD, no more than 30 minutes [in the crappy weather] away). His cousin was pretty floored to see us there...and surprisingly the only family that made it were the ones from NY.

I had mentioned to Matt, "I wonder if the reception will be canceled?" Sure enough it was. We ended up having pizza (from the only place open, a gas station) and beer in the church fellowship hall. That was all we had eaten all day. After the "reception" we were going to get take out from Outback...only to find that EVERYTHING was CLOSED. We ended up eating some almonds and an orange we had in the car for dinner.

The bride and groom though were completely unphased by the whole weather thing. They just wanted to get married and didn't care how and where. I told Matt if it were me, I would have been in tears knowing that people wouldn't have made it to our wedding. They did have the reception rescheduled for the next day though.

Ironically, it was all the MD'ers that gave us a TON of crap because we had the exact same storm in NY, the day before our wedding. Now the shoe is on the other foot and NO ONE can say anything about our wedding...at least the storm was done and the roads cleared by the day of our wedding.

The next day we woke up and it was beautiful. I'm really rather jealous of all you Marylanders: I would love to have 14" of snow dumped on us...as it is, it's looking to be a pretty brown Christmas here :-(

Only 14"? We got 25" on our side of the Beltway.

I think the issue with this area is that 1) so many people who live here are not from the area and don't know how to drive in snow, and 2) the area governments are not equipped to handle even the slightest amount of snow here, so everything goes kaplooey.

I'm sure the bride and groom were very glad to have y'all there. We've still got 5 foot piles of snow from the plows, I can send you some :)
