Our Home ~ Bathroom

We live in a town of about 5,000 people...at least half of those people have heard about our bathroom and half of those who have heard, have showered in our shower. (Supposedly, our house was quite the party place before we bought it). The room is 10 x 11.5' with a clawfoot tub...the previous owner concocted a multi-head shower system with about 8 heads...it was labeled by our previous pastor's wife as "kinky".

We've planned on renovating the room since the very beginning, but with Matt hurting his back and infertility it was always on the back burner...it is now happening! We originally planned to replace the claw foot tub (which is too small) with a 2 person jacuzzi tub, and to install a 2 person (double head) shower in the opposite corner (where the caddy is next to the sink) in addition to replacing the sink, mirror, and toilet. The claw foot is staying, but the rest is going ahead as planned.

I had posted a while ago about some of the interesting quirks of our bathroom...if you'd like to read them they are here.

The Renos

If you go HERE you can see the list of everything that we did in our bathroom.

Our Home ~ Office / Pantry

The office was a bathroom at one point, there are holes in the floor where the drains were for the tub and toilet. The only reason I can think it is no longer the bathroom is that the plumbing froze FREQUENTLY, which is a problem that we have in the laundry room (which is parallel to this room).

For some very odd reason we have found this paint color all over the house: Windows, doors, trim, walls, ceilings...you name it, it was probably painted that color at some point.

I've been working on this room on and off since we bought our home. Originally I just painted it this lovely color (left) called Behr's Autumn Mist, but it was way too orange-y so I sponged some white over it. Then we added a window, so that I could see the backyard.

In Spring '10 I decided to redo the room, for good. The colors were inspired by the April 2010 cover of BHG. I loved the robin's egg blue and the bright yellow. I color matched the cover into Behr paint, "Eucalyptus Leaf", then painted the floor "Bison Brown".

To deal with the shoddy floors in this room and the holes from the plumbing I put down a couple of sheets of 1" plywood, painted it (Behr's "Bison Brown"), then put some quarter round molding around the edges to finish it. The desk was cut down and put on table legs we had. I still want to build a low bookcase to store the printer on and some of the computer necessities.

Our Home ~ Laundry Room

Originally our laundry was in the basement...it was great! There was a chute from the bathroom right down on the floor next to the washer...however, the basement is laid stone and dirt floors with large slabs of stone on it. I was constantly scared to death to do laundry, for fear that I would pick something off the floor and have snakes in it (I have never seen a snake in my basement, this was just my fear).

This was where the laundry room was going to go. There was one tiny window, the floor was rotted entirely, and there was no plumbing, electric or insulation.

We had to rip the walls down to the studs and the floor down to the joists, and rebutt and relevel everything in this room. It was quite a bit of work, but worth it to have the job done the RIGHT WAY (something the previous owners did not believe in).

The window still hasn't be framed in (there's an issue in old houses, or at least our old house, that new construction materials are not the same thickness as the old construction walls), and I've added curtains above the shelving because I store a lot of seasonal decor and unused appliances up there. Oh, and we also have new appliances.

Our Home ~ Stairs, Hallway, and Half-Bath

Stairs and Hallway

The stairwell and hallway are nothing elaborate or fancy, but we have done some work with them. They were painted beige with brown painted steps and nothing was ever done to the railing in the upstairs hallway, which was a MAJOR safety hazard (you could push it over).

We painted the walls Behr's Havana Cream and the treads were painted black. We did replace the ceiling light, added a table and some wall art.

The quilt wall hanging I bought at the Harvest Festival we do in the fall. I passed it up one year, because it was more than I wanted to spend, but really loved it. All that year I thought about it now and then, when we went back the following year, they still had it. I figured at that point I was supposed to buy it.

Upstairs Half-Bath

The half-bath was made from what was once the only closet in our house (the one in A's room). We weren't going to use it, and after me falling enough times at night going downstairs to the bathroom, Matt decided to install a bathroom upstairs.

We went for a nautical look to this room, since Matt did go to school for Marine Transportation.

Our Home ~ Upstairs Bedrooms

Avelyn's Room

This was Avelyn's room. While dealing with our infertility we struggled with what to do with this room (the bed was the sellers)....we held off on doing anything in this room, expecting to get pregnant "any time now", then when it was apparent that we weren't going to be parents easily we closed the door and left it alone. Slowly, after getting pissed off at infertility, I decided to just do the room...someday there would be a baby in there. I painted it a neutral color. It was almost therapeutic, in that it gave me something that I could DO, since having a kid was something we didn't have control over.

I painted the room Behr's Disney "Christopher Robin's Swing" on the bottom and "New Day" on top. The middle section is a custom mix of the two colors. I had originally intended on putting Beatrix Potter wallies as a chair rail border, but decided against it.

The carpeting we got from Lowes and installed ourselves, we had a new window installed in the room, ran some electric, installed a new ceiling fixture, and built the bookcase. We're pleased with how it came out and were even MORE ecstatic that there was a BABY in that room!

The Guest Room
We wanted our guest room to have the feel of a retreat...even though the only people who sleep in there are my aunt and uncle and their dog, and on occasion my sister (who ironically hasn't spent the night since A was born).

The paint was Behr's Mermaid Treasure, the print was bought on allposters.com, the wall sconces were on clearance at Kohls and the chest of draws with the picture is an antique from another aunt.

Henry, James and Ellie's Room
Of course with the arrival of our newest additions we needed a room for them. Since our guest room was used so infrequently {and lets be honest, was the only room left} that became their room. I had found curtains I had loved online, but were too expensive.

Then I found fabric and my MIL made the curtains. BUT the curtains made the walls look too green, so I had to repaint! We went with Behr's Jamaican Sea, which had a much more blue undertone. The floor was painted Behr's Bison Brown, a delicious chocolatey color. The monkey wall decal we got on Etsy.

"Master" Bedroom

When we closed on our house the bedroom we chose for our own was painted this lovely shade of pink, with a small single bulb pull light from the 60s.
We just wanted to change the room and make it our own, so we painted it Behr's "Liberty". The furniture is from Ikea, the painting is of the west coast of Ireland (Clifden). We left the floor as it was, but bought a cheap remnant carpet just to throw over it. We did replace the pull light with a remote ceiling fan, which has made a huge difference in the amount of light {and air} in the room.

In Spring'11 I decided that we really needed to do something about our bedroom, plus we really needed more storage, since we had no closet.

For a Mother's Day present Matt built me a closet and I bought the paint to redo our room. The green wall was Martha Stewart's "Bay Leaf" and the cream was "Heavy Cream". We even repainted the floor to "Brook Trout", an awesome brownish-grey. The curtains I bought from JCP several years ago and added a black ribbon to them for a little bit of detail.

This is a painting of a harbor in Clifden, Ireland. It was just in a poster frame before, but I took some molding, painted it black and voila! custom framing.
Another little project - I've had this lamp since I was a little girl, it's perfect for when you just need a little light {like when Matt is getting up for work at 4am}, but it was pink. I painted the body the green and used a roller to paint the lamp shade cream.
This was another little craft project. Since this was a budget-build we were not shelling out the money for doors, plus there really wasn't any where for them to open and I don't like sliding doors. I took the shower curtain from our old shower, cut the bottom 12" off, stitched in a 12" strip of black fabric (a sheet from walmart) and then stitched the original bottom back on. It's great!
The finished closet - such a better use of space! Matt and I each have a place to hang things, plus we have 5 shelves that fit our Rubbermaid totes with seasonal clothes.
I still need to do a lot of decorating in here, but I'm waiting until we have family pictures done with the kiddos then I'll put a bunch of those up.

Again...we planned on putting up crown moulding and a few wall decor items...but this is the room we're most proud of! The walls are painted custom colors. I had them put a partial formula into the paint (in college I worked at Home Depot in the paint department). We still need to stain the chairs (one of DH's many projects).

Our Home ~ Living Room

This is the only picture I have of the living room when we bought the house (I really wish I had saved the web listing for the house). The walls were off white and the ceiling was painted baby blue.

When we first closed on the house we jumped right in with painting: I wanted to have the house in live in condition by November 1, 2005. I was planning a 25th anniversary surprise party for my parents and this was the only the place that I could have it, without them knowing.

April 2008 I got bored and tired of always dealing with infertility, so I decided to repaint our living room.
