In Which We Have Sheetrock and Other Matters of Opinion

It’s been a while since I shared anything house-related, because there really wasn’t much to share, unless you wanted to see open studs with and without wires running in them. Since I didn’t think that was too exciting for you guys, I figured I’d hold off for a bit.

We got our mudroom door reinstalled! We cut through the siding, but used the door we had already: We did discover that there was absolutely no insulation in the wall…Kind of makes me wonder what all that blown in insulation was for when we “weatherized” a few years ago. The cinderblock “chimney” s till needs to come down.IMG_0276We also got the Bilco door installed to the basement. The deck will go to the right of that.IMG_0277

What my living room currently looks like: Yea. Still lots to have happen in here, but we have a pass through! I am so beyond grateful that I have an Ikea couch. I canNOT wait to take that cover off and wash it!DSC_0012And the Kitchen {going left to right from the post that stayed}.DSC_0013DSC_0014DSC_0016The mudroom…There’s a closet-space when you walk in on the left, that will be our pantry area, then to the right of that will be the washer and dryer area with shelves above. The opposite wall will have more shelves, bottom storage for shoes, maybe a bench and hooks for coats etc.DSC_0017Better shot of the pantry area {looking in from the mudroom exterior door}.DSC_0018The upstairs. You can see the doorway into the closet/storage area on the left.DSC_0020

Panoramic of the upstairs: The closet, the bedroom with the sitting area and the bathroom {left to right}.IMG_0421Bathroom {left to right}: Sink, then toilet, washer/dryer behind that wall, then the tub.IMG_0490

Our flooring: 1800 sqf of Southern Yellow Pine. I think the floor is going to look incredible when it’s done, in the meantime everyone is cursing me under their breath because of how many pieces there are to nail down. We’re going to do a very light stain on it, then poly it several times so that we don’t have to worry about kids or dogs.DSC_0021Last weekend was the World’s Largest Yard Sale in our town, at the fair grounds. My MIL and I headed down at 8am to check it out. I was looking for bigger pieces of furniture for the house {which I didn’t find}. We did find a large 2x4 mirror for $20, so I bought it figuring it could go above the bathroom vanity. Then a few vendors down I found this beauty for $10…I came home with 2 mirrors {in my defense the girls are going to need a mirror in their room}.

This mirror {see picture} is awesome! It’s old. It’s solid oak. It’s heavy. We’re going to strip it and refinish it to match the bathroom vanity. I could not have found a more perfect mirror for the space. Well worth the $1 admission fee.IMG_0427

I also bought {not at the yard sale} tile for the kitchen back splash, including my arabesque tile for above the new stove we got {it was what I really wanted and on sale for a really good price}. Now I’m trying to figure out the tile for the upstairs shower. We’re going with a 3x6 subway tile in white, with a gray grout. My problem is I can’t decide on an accent tile.

This is my favorite tile. It reminds me of the ocean…which is kind of the feel we’re going for in the bathroom. The problem is, with the cost of shipping to order a sample, I might as well buy the 4 or 5 sheets that I actually need.

favorite tileThis is my second favorite tile. It has the frosted glass, the rippled glass, and a solid glass tile. In all honesty I would get this one in a heartbeat if it were square tiles.Other choice

My problem is that I can’t decide, so I’m hoping you guys can give me a bit of insight: Which would you pick?
I really prefer the look of square tiles as an accent to white rectangular {3x6} subway tiles. I’m not worried about what is going to be easier to clean, it’s only Matt and I using this bathroom.

This isn’t even a pressing decision that needs to be made, since the tile in the bathroom will be one of the last things to happen.

Onto the next opinion poll.

Originally I had really wanted to do “Farmhouse” styled molding around the kitchen windows, a la this:

But now I’m wondering if it would be better to stick with the moldings that are on the rest of the windows, just a plain square edge mitered edge 3” molding.

We’re not planning on putting curtains up in the kitchen. We are going to be using some sort of shade to keep the heat out in the morning, but that’s all. And I kind of like the idea of putting shelves above the windows to display collections {kerosene lanterns, Matt’s beer steins, and my tea cups}, but that might only be along the windows on the back of the house.

My question to you: Do we go with what the rest of the house has or go with a farmhouse style in the kitchen?
There are 9 windows in the kitchen.

Psst….we’ve picked paint colors too! Design-Seeds is an awesome way to decide on a color pallette. The siding is also ordered.

I’m really hoping that things will start coming together very quickly in the next couple of weeks. Matt and I are going to start assembling the kitchen cabinets {we figure it’s best to do that before we can’t return things} in the next week. If you feel inclined, be sure to keep us in your prayers during that experience.

Blog Silence

If you receive my newsletter you will have heard a bit about this there…

I think I’ve stopped and started, deleted and rewrote this post at least a half-dozen times, trying to figure out how best to convey what I’ve been thinking, feeling, and not saying…I still haven’t got too far with that, but here’s my best shot.

A few months ago I kissed social media goodbye, when I pretty much had it with Facebook and trying to do all those things that blogger should. I committed myself to no longer being a slave to the should dos, and focused on the things I enjoyed {namely pinterest and instagram}; which I enjoyed. There was no pressure to be on everything.

Somehow that started to include my blog, and it’s not because I took a intentional break or I had nothing to say. It had more to do with me and where I was in my head. We’ve been through a lot in the past few months, not all bad, but just a lot. We were living in a house of chaos while we prepped to do renovations; we moved in with the in-laws while said renovations were happening; my sister was {and still is} very sick; and after 70 days we’re still living with my in-laws. For me, it has just been a lot of intense things, that I’ve just…not been overwhelmed by, but processing.

The processing and dealing with all of it has been a lot, and I haven’t had much time and energy for anything, beyond taking care of the kids {which has presented it’s own struggles}. It doesn’t help that I’ve felt like I’m in a bit of a dead-zone, when it comes to time. I walk outside and I’m surprised to see green trees, blue skies, and sun; I’m still thinking that it’s March. Time, for me, has very much stood still. Heck, it only hit me the other day that the fair is 2 months away!

While I’ve been silent, I’m certainly not going anywhere as a blogger. I love blogging, I love sharing {or as the case is most of the time…over-sharing}, and I love talking and emailing and keeping in touch with all of you! I’m hoping that once we’re home, and I’m back in my own space that the blog will pick up again. I have several posts noted on my calendar for the summer already, but I have to actually find the time to sit down and write them.

In the meantime, I’m trying to be more active on Instagram, so you can definitely find me there.
Catch me up on how you are all doing: Any exciting news or fun summer plans? Or boring news and no plans?

And I wanted to share this picture with you all…it’s from the top of one of the local roads on the way to my in-laws.

The Rub-a-Dub Debacle

A few weeks ago we bit the bullet and ordered our tub for the master bathroom, the Kohler Bellwether. It was cast iron, a beautiful looking tub, that didn’t cost nearly as much as other cast iron tubs. The decision was made literally after weeks of research, hemming and hawing, and debating what tub to go with. I’m not exaggerating.

The tub was finally to be delivered. I waited around the house last week on Wednesday or Thursday. The tub arrived, there was a slight imperfection on the side…I couldn’t tell if it was damaged or just an imperfection, but it was really no big deal. I signed for the tub, took a few pictures and scampered back to the children.

But there was this sinking feeling in my stomach; that I somehow did something wrong and just completely messed up.

I showed Matt the pictures, told him about the scuff, and that was that.

I called my FIL the next morning and started talking about electrical stuff… “wait…you didn’t get my text, did you?” “Uhh, no.” “Go read my text and call me back”…..”Jess tub drain is on the wrong side”. There it was, my screw up.The Rub-a-Dub Debacle: The nightmare of the wrong bathtub @LifeintheWhiteHouse.com

I called my FIL and said, “You told me to order a left drain tub: I did what you told me to.”

Long story short: We had to flip flop the shower and the washer/dryer in the upstairs bathroom, but no one told me that in flip flopping the places that I needed to flip flop the drain. At least it wasn’t my fault.

I called the company, told them about the potential damage, and that I ordered the wrong tub: Congratulations! We are now the proud owners of a tub that we can’t use*, and can only pray that we can get rid of without eating the whole thing. I can eat a lot, but somehow I think a 5’ cast iron tub is beyond even my abilities.

And now we were in a dilemma: My FIL is waiting on this tub to finish running the plumbing and drain-work, so that they can close up the walls and start sheet-rocking. There’s no way I can order a tub online and have it here in a few days. Off to Home Depot and Lowes we went, the entire time of which, I was sick at the thought of $500 down the drain {pun intended}.

We went to HD first, since they had quite a few more tubs in stock than Lowes had: Checked them out, then headed to Lowes, then back to HD. We ended up going with Bootz Maui for the tub, $179 for a steel-porcelain enameled tub. The very tub that I had originally chosen online and had decided against, because I was not at all familiar with Bootz and could only find a few reviews {all favorable} online.

Is it my dream tub? No, not by any stretch of the imagination, but it is a bigger tub than the Kohler Bellwether that we had purchased; which is a plus, especially since we’re planning on making it a 2 person shower {we debated having just a pan shower, but Matt felt strongly about having a tub in the bathroom}. Hopefully it’s a good tub and lasts us a good long while, because I don’t want to deal with a bathtub any time soon.

photo (1)

I keep trying to tell myself that if the tub is our only major mess-up in the house, we’re doing good. Yes it was $500, but hopefully we can sell it and get some of the money back…the whole thing just makes me sick though, and probably will until we’ve sold it.

*We would have to pay shipping back to the company, $200-300, plus a 15% restocking fee.

White House Reno 2014–It’s Electrifying!

There aren’t many exciting pictures this week, and there probably won’t be for a few more weeks. We’re at that tedious point of lots of little things that are getting done, but it doesn’t LOOK like there is much progressive. The big thing for the past week is that they’ve continued putting on the new roofing {which I’m having a hard time getting a picture of—no I am not climbing up there}, and have run a majority of the wiring for the house.

DSC_0195They did get the walls around the stairway framed in.DSC_0194And some of the plumbing run.DSC_0196DSC_0197DSC_0198

Don’t be surprised if I don’t have too many Friday updates over the next few weeks, and if I do…enjoy them!

The Nesting Place {a Review}

I’ve been eyeballing TheNester’s new book for a while now, and have had it on my to-purchase-with-Amazon-rewards list. While I’ve long loved the Nester, her style isn’t particularly mine, but there are usually a few things I’m oohing and ahhing over on her blog: It’s one of those spaces that are always so clean and bright looking. So you can imagine my pleasure when it popped up as available for reviewing with BookLookBloggers.com.

nesting-place

While I have never, ever in my life, rented, this book had general all around awesome tips on how to make a house {or apartment or anything else} a home, without getting caught up in the convoluted idea of “Perfect” {which doesn’t exist by the way}.

Myquillyn talked about her own personal struggles with house envy and realizing the need to see beyond that and her budget. This book was just what I needed to help me start thinking about all the new spaces that I’m going to soon be decorating in our home {It gave me a definite paintbrush itch!}

I have always drooled over Pottery Barn, Restoration Hardware, The Company Store and any other home catalog, only to look at the prices and think yea right. The problem with those “homes” is that they’re not real, people aren’t LIVING in them.

While I would love for my home to be magazine perfect and company ready, what I really want is a home for people to feel comfortable in, and that is Myquillyn’s most important point in this book, creating the home that serves you, your family, while welcoming others into it.

If you’ve been struggling with being happy in your own home or having things just the way you want them, take a gander at this book; because it is so much more than just a how to guide on making your space beautiful.

*I received a digital copy of this book for free from BookLookBlogger in exchange for my review, my opinions here are entirely my own.

You can purchase a copy of this book at Amazon.com or any other book store.

White House Reno 2014—We have windows!

This past week has been absolutely insane. Matt’s grandparents’ interment was yesterday, which means there has been tons of family coming in all week. I realized yesterday that I hadn’t even started, let alone posted, this weeks update pictures. This is the first time since Thursday that I’ve actually sat down at the computer.

Shall we…

These pictures were taken from the post that stayed in the kitchen, going from left to right. The stairs {bottom right in the picture} will be going under the 2 windows to the left.DSC_0144Where the kitchen table will be going.DSC_0145Where the woodstove will be {in the far right corner}.DSC_0146The got the master “suite” framed in the week before.DSC_0147DSC_0148DSC_0150DSC_0151The rainy days this week they worked on framing out the kitchen areas. The room with the red pipe in it, is where the mudroom/laundry room will going.DSC_0158The kitchen wall between the living room. You can see the big opening that will be the “pass through” to the kitchen. I gotta be able to keep an eye on the kids somehow.DSC_0159The basement steps were installed. We got a great deal on these since there was a small dent on one of the steps. The original buyer didn’t want it with the ding, so we got the deal.DSC_0168The new sliding glass door in the kitchen. We went with the brand Neuma and I’m really pleased with it. It’s a nice, solid heavy feeling door.DSC_0169And the roofing! We went with Charcoal, but it looks like a darker slate blue. Whatever. I don’t know how anyone can pick a roof color based off of a 2cm x 2cm swatch. I wanted black, but we thought it might be a bit too stark.DSC_0173Picture from the neighbors’ so that you can see the roof.DSC_0178

I went to Lowes on Friday {Jamie had a hearing appointment} and bought all that we needed for the upstairs bathroom. There isn’t too much more to buy as far as finish pieces. We ordered our bath tub, as well as 1800sqf of flooring for all the floors in the house {we’re doing them all over again}.  We’re ordering the interior doors and siding tomorrow, and finalized the countertops that we’re going to be going with.

There’s still lots to do. I keep hoping we’re going to be moving back in soon, but I have the feeling that it’s easier for my FIL if we don’t. Things should start coming together pretty quick {they’ve been going incredibly fast so far}; once we have the electrical inspection done we can get the walls insulated and sheet rocked. Then bring someone in to do all of the taping {hopefully we can find someone}. After that it’s painting {hoping my broke rib feels better by then} and flooring!

I think we should be well within the “deadline” of getting it finished before the fair, but who knows. The focus right now is to get the inside done {at least I think it is}, then focus on the siding and trimming the windows and doors. It’s definitely coming together though.

White House Reno 2014—Weather Proof and Walls in the Bedroom

There really wasn’t much work {to be seen} going on at the house this week; it was a lot of prep work and getting the house weather-tight with the zip system and the roof trusses in place.

DSC_0133

The windows still need to be cut out, but it’s all ready for the windows, doors, roofing, and siding to go in. The windows should be coming today, and the door arrived yesterday. Not sure if we’ll see them in before the weekend or not, but definitely in the next week or so.

The big excitement happened yesterday: They got the walls for our bedroom framed out! Matt and I went down last night with his dad to finalize all of the electrical placement before they run the wiring tomorrow.

DSC_0136

The bathroom. You can see {right side} the new doorway into our hall, which will be a pocket door, and the bathroom will also have a pocket door. My FIL asked what was with me and the pocket doors…I don’t know, I just like them. It just makes a lot of sense to me when you have several doors in close proximity {that, and the whole idea is pretty cool!}

Where the insulation is, that is where the tub/shower and stacked washer will go, the opposite wall will have the vanity and toilet. We’re planning on building some sort of shelf/cabinet to store towels and stuff in the bathroom. There is a window in the center of the far wall {can you see it?}

We went this past weekend and looked at some cork flooring to put in this room, but neither of us were impressed with it. So, we’re back to square one….we’ll be putting the pine flooring straight through and doing our very best to seal it from water damage. I’m still having a heck of a time finding BLACK {not oiled bronze or something else} faucets…I will though…don’t worry.

I had really hoped to salvage this clawfoot tub that’s in Matt’s grandparents yard, but, alas, there is a huge crack right down the middle of it, that I am neither qualified or willing to deal with, so in the field it stays. In the meantime I have to get my booty in gear and find a bathtub that we like.

photo 3

Continuing in the master bedroom.

The opening in the wall leads into the closet/attic/studio space, and what is now the ONLY attic/storage space in our house. It takes up a good chunk of the room, but it was needed, and the room is big enough. The bed will go where the ladder is.

DSC_0140Continuing around the room. Where my FIL is standing will be our “sitting area”. This is one of those dream things…I’ve always wanted a little sitting area in our bedroom, a place just to relax and chill without having to walk downstairs and inevitable wake the kids as soon as our feet are in the hall. I can’t even tell you how much I look forward to looking out my windows and enjoying the sunrise.DSC_0141

{Left} Looking toward the back of the house. We’re planning on building floor to ceiling shelving along the left side, so that we can store all of the things that were once in the attic, most of which was things in boxes or storage totes {Christmas, kids’ stuff, and some seasonal things}. A lot of the bigger things {ie. baby toys} are in use by family members or stored in my IL’s barn.

{Right} Looking toward the original house will be a U shaped closet of some sort. Matt and I really don’t hang much clothing and don’t have {me} much clothing, so this is a ton of space for us, and is a vast improvement on the closet in our current bedroom.Closet

And that’s about it. We did go over the interior walls of the kitchen area and “hammered” that out to. Next week should be exciting since we should {or at least I think we probably will} have all of the windows and doors in place. Once the electrical is all approved, then we can finish the insulating, get the walls closed up with sheetrock, and start to look like something {but that all will take a few weeks at least}.

I do believe the roofing and siding has been ordered, if not it will be in the next day or so. We’re going with a charcoal gray metal roofing. our roof does not get much sunlight because of the huge trees around our house {trees that are much to expensive to remove}, so asphalt shingle roofing really is not the best bet for us. We’re doing LP SmartSide clapboard siding in Cream, then I’ll repaint the front of the house to match.

Lots more work still to go, but it’s pretty fantasmagorical to walk around all of it.

White House Renovations 2014—Framing

Last week we had the downstairs pretty much completed for the framing. On Saturday we got a bunch of people together to help put up the 2nd story floor trusses; the whole thing took 34 minutes {Matt timed it}. It was a huge help, because then they could start on Monday with putting the decking down for the 2nd floor and getting the walls up.

Here’s the 3rd finished wall of the downstairs. You can see the 3 windows that will look out on the swing set and side yard. The woodstove that we’re looking at will go in the corner to the right of the furthest right windows, then there will be a wall and the FRONTS of my washer and dryer will line up with the original house.

DSC_0371DSC_0372DSC_0374DSC_0376DSC_0377The second story floor trusses in place…they weren’t nailed down. Of course the delivery truck arrived with the plywood decking 10 minutes after everyone left, otherwise they could’ve worked for the day and got them down and started the walls.DSC_0379DSC_0381DSC_0382DSC_0385This is the crazy access to our original basement that I mentioned before. We will have to build a flip down staircase to access this part from this room. We’ve decided to not lose the stairwell from the kitchen {we were going to make it a pantry}, because this is just ridiculous. I am not going to climb into this thing every time I need to get something from the freezer.DSC_0386On Monday, my father in law and our contractor started the upstairs walls.DSC_0394DSC_0395Avie got to come down with us to check it out and took advantage of the wide open spaces to practice her dance routine.DSC_0397This wall here is the kitchen. You can see on the floor the sheet of plywood higher than the rest, those are the stairs into the basement. There will be a pony wall {meaning it will only be about 4’ high and 3’ wide} on the narrow end {opposite the windows}, then our range will be there, and the kitchen cabinets.DSC_0398Looking through the doorway and windows to the backyard.DSC_0399DSC_0400The fridge is going to go between the green post in the middle and the red post, then the rest of it will be cabinets, with our pass through to the living room.DSC_0401DSC_0402DSC_0403Upstairs….let me just say how weird this was….to stand in what I remember our attic being {damp, dark, and just nasty} and see this… it’s just incredible!DSC_0406My Mountain….with our White Tree of GondorDSC_0407DSC_0410This is the view we will have from our bed, add in a few windows and walls though.DSC_0413DSC_0415Tuesday and Wednesday were miserable…absolutely miserable. It was cold and rainy and just not nice. I felt terrible that they were down there working in the rain. But they did get a few more walls up!DSC_0424DSC_0425These are the windows that will be in our bedroom, all but the one on the far right, that will be in the center of the bathroom wall.DSC_0427The two windows toward the left will actually be in the closet/storage/studio area.DSC_0428It looks massive from the outside. I keep thinking to myself, “oh my what did we do?! This is huge and unbalanced, and oh my.” I know it will be more balanced once it’s finished, but boy are there a lot of moments of self doubt in a house.DSC_0431Despite the rain they did manage to get the tile floor ripped out of the breakfast nook {soon to be mudroom}. My FIL said it was miserable, it took 2 hours to break up all the tile and get it out, but the original wood floors {which I’m thinking were the original pine subfloors- Thank you Rehab Addict} were still intact.DSC_0436You can just see how much water damage there was.  There was a hole in the floor and it was all spongy. I don’t know if there was a bathroom here at one point or what. From what we can tell the bathroom was at least in 2 previous places before existing where it is now.DSC_0442The kitchen has an entirely different feel once there are walls. It went from feel big, but not really that big, to feeling like you have a room that’s a good size for what we needed and wanted.DSC_0444DSC_0445

Thursday and Friday they worked on getting the roof trusses up and in place.

DSC_0004

The second floor…

May 2nd Roof PanThe Kitchen….May 1 img

Tomorrow Matt and a friend of our’s are going to finish putting the plywood on the roof.

The roof….the current source of deliberation and stress.

We had planned on using a charcoal gray metal roofing, which we then discovered would basically mean that all of our trim molding along the roofline would be non-existent because of the need for the roofing to overlap the fascia board. You can kind of see that there is a lot of detailing on the molding along the roofline…I’m really rather sad about the possibility of loosing it. But I had consoled myself about that possibility with the possibility of doing some sort of scallop detailing in the gable and putting a new vent up.

IMG_4292b

The other topic on the table today was whether to reside the originally part of the house, or leave it as is {there really is nothing wrong with it}. I contacted the company that we’re getting our siding from {LP SmartSide} about such siding, and they don’t make it. Great! But they know of a company who can create it for us, but I haven’t heard anything back from them yet.

So. Big decisions to be made this weekend: Whether to stick with the metal roofing and loose the trim molding or possibly go with shingles, which then flows into trying to add more detailing into the gable siding {if we lose the roof detailing} and whether or not we should reside the entire house. Decisions. Decisions. And Matt and I are going to Bing-town to look at flooring and tile tomorrow, at least it will be an afternoon out.
